Windows is awesome (was)

I’m republishing some old articles, and this one is entitled: Windows is awesome (was).

Is windows really great? is windows really awesome?

Well… there is no end to this subject… there always going to be people out there that will make statements that something is better than others… than or semething is great and the other is not…

Please folks… listen until the end before you make a snarky comment…

To be honest with you guys… I’ve developed some applications for windows, in visual basic 3, 4, 5 and 6… and some stuff in the first and second iteration of the .net framework… after that i’ve droped completely  the development in Microsoft platforms… People who knows me, know that I’ve started in the programming world using the big iron… the AS/400 that looked like a fridge… used also, cobol, c, c++, clipper, and other…

But exactly… what is awsome?

Awesomeness is something that is inspiring, overwhelming, impressive… well just look at the dictionary and you will get it…

What makes something awesome?

in short… Is to do something better that the others…

Windows for a long time was AWESOME let me enphasise this, this is writen with capital letters here… was AWESOME! It really was!!! WIndows 3.1 and 3.11 for workgroups was the epitome of the operating system!

Well done, very few bugs, and really helpfull for the users, for work  and all companies…

After that we had the great Windows 95, 98, than millenium… (who remember this one?)  the N.T, i ussualy joke with this… Microsoft NT – The Neanderthal Technology…

But the windows I used for longer time was windows 2000 (2 thousands)… I worked in a company and we were making some 32bit cobol stuff and this was by far the best windows operating system I worked! I worked with the same setup for about 2 years… without significant crashes! Than we had XP, vista and now we are with 10!!!

And this is the operating system we are talking about! The current iteration of windows… It was re writen several times, but has windows really improved???

Very well… normally we see all these great guru’s comparing windows to mac, windows to linux… the advantages of one agains the other…  but do you realize that is the “familiarity” of the users with windows that makes that market share to be so big?

Let’s just not forget that Linux is built for privacy and lots of linux users don’t even bother to“report” that they use linux.

Ask anybody, anyone:  who know how to use windows??? you will get about 95% of yes’s… I bet!!! So… 95% of the people you know are familiar with windows… 2% or 3% mac user’s… and the others… well… they are happy!!!  These numbers are the marketshare that is being told to us for a long time… Windows has the biggest market share… but the market share doesen’t mean not even tell us that is windows awesome! It’s simply tell us that is familiar to people!

well… you know that almost every computer nowadays is bundled with windows… and this is happenning for so many years… so the familiarity starts right here… you buy a computer and the OS is… of course… Windows!!!

So… if windows is familiar to soo many people, why we starting to hate it??? why we’re starting to dislike windows???

1st of all, there were the importance of having software that was not availiable to other plaforms… Microsoft Office for example. But these dependecy doesen’t exists anymore… you have software for office suits availiable in all platforms, document processing, spreasheets, etc… are availiable in android, in mac, linux, in all platforms… well… even microsoft is building the office suite for other platforms…

Another example is for photoshop… you have a free replacement… you have GIMP, for Adobe Premiere or Sony Vegas you Have KDEnLive, for After Efects you have Belnder, for the ilustrator you have inkScape… and so many others…

and has we know windows is the major icubator for virus, malware, randsomeware and other digital threats…

But even worst than this, well… feel free to listen to WindowsSucks pod cast where I speak about why I dont use windows and that will be out soon…

if windows was a free upgrade for windows 7 and windows 8 users, microsoft needed to find a way to generate  income… so the best way to do this is to spy on the user behavior, sending all that telemetry data… every keypressed, web cam, microphone… and many other things… and use this information to their advantage… selling data…

Is this what we want for an operating system? Certanly not!

Windows has simply lost his edge… and will keep loosing…

And that’s why windows is not awesome anymore!

Thanks for reading listening and watching,
